Stonecutters Lodge is a secure and scenic country estate with river walks, a wetland with bird-hide, or a mountain hike with stunning views from the summit. . If you are into birding, Guerney’s sugar bird is often seen in the Protea bushes. There are numerous destinations on the property where guests can picnic or braai in an idyllic setting, and swimming in a river pool is an invigorating experience.
FLY-FISHING: As Stonecutters is a trout lodge offering 2 dams and three kilometres of river fishing, many of our guests choose to fly-fish. If you would like to learn to fly-fish a local guide can be hired to teach casting techniques and some of the basics. Fly-fishing equipment is available for hire.
WALKING & JOGGING: The track behind Stone Manor leads to the weir deck on the river, which is a charming swimming, picnic and braai area. It is a 400m walk from Stone Manor (15 minutes) or a quick car ride.
BIRDWATCHING: A path left of the large dam leads to the bird hide overlooking the wetland. Purple Heron, Bald Ibis and others feathered friends are spotted from the hide. Kingfishers along the river and grassland birds abound
DRIVES from Stonecutters - Dullstroom or “Dullies” the local nickname!
This quaint town is only 35kms or a 25km ride from here and is a tourist destination with many curio shops, coffee spots, restaurants and pubs
GAME RESERVES & NATURE RESERVES CLOSE BY:
Verlorenvallei- just outside of Dullstroom. Tel: 013 254 0799. Phone before you go! Great landscapes famous for amazing flowers and all cranes of the feathered variety!. Head back to Dullstroom for lunch.
Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve and Lydenburg Museum. Tel: 082 779 3748. Close to Lydenburg. This reserve has a small interesting museum dating back to the iron age and Voortrekker memorability- BUT is also fantastic for mountain biking- various tracks from easy to technically difficult. Birdwatching is good and game are abundant too.
DRIVES FURTHER AWAY (PANORAMA ROUTE)
The towns of Sabie, Graskop (over the stunning Long Tom Pass) and Pilgrims Rest are only a short drive from the lodge. God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon, Mac Mac Falls and the Potholes are also an easy drive away. Make a day of it and have lunch in Sabie or Graskop. An Inexpensive map is available at the office.

Bird of Prey Centre: 082 899 4108. Watch the Big 5 fly daily at 10h30 & 14h30 (depending on the weather)! Restaurant for light meals on the premises and a kids playing area is popular. All raptors are rehabilitated birds and are released back to the wild if possible.
