Day Drives, Touring from Stonecutters
The Gustav-Klingbiel Nature reserve just 15 minutes away on the foothills of the Long Tom Pass offers a number of mountain biking trails with varying degrees of difficulty and length- from riders just learning the skill to those that wanting a technically difficult outride. Children can use the easier, shorter routes. There are a number of hiking trails, bird watching and walking routes.
Iron age sites that date back to 500 AD can be explored on the reserve and the small museum has replicas of the famous Lydenburg heads and Voortrekker memorabilia on display.
Bird watching and Hiking unhindered by traffic is a must.
Scenic Drives out of Lydenburg: Pack your camera! - the Panorama Route is one on the most spectacular drives in Mpumalanga and probably South Africa. .
The route: Our office has an excellent map of the area but we suggest you drive out of Lydenburg via the Long Tom Pass onto Sabie. On your way stop at the many lookout points and enjoy a coffee at one of the many eateries, coffee hotspots.
Sabie to Graskop- Mac-Mac Pools, Mac Mac Falls- Have a cooling swim at these spots and proceed to Graskop: Grab a pancake at Harries Pancakes and for the energetic try the Big Swing and Foefie slide at the Graskop Gorge. Drive accross the Gorge to the Graskop Glass Lift that will lower you 51 metres into the Afromontane forest where hiking, walking and bird watching are amazing. Enjoy a meal at the cafe
Drive back to the R523 in a northally direction and turn onto R534 and take in 3 more exceptional viewpoints. The Pinnackle, God's Window and Wonderview.
There are other special scenically amazing places to visit: Lisbon & Berlin Falls, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Lowveld View and the 3 Rondawels. Do it if you have time!
Return to Stonecutters via Orighstad to Lydenburg R36 and the R540 towards Dullstroom.
