Dullstroom Winter Festival – A roaring success!

Posted by Margi Butler on Sep 10, 2016 7:44:22 PM

The first week-end of July saw the village of Dullstroom hosting their annual Winter Festival or “Christmas in July” and the week-end was a resounding success.  This year the Festival outstripped previous years on all fronts: the number of visitors to the village, the participation level of the local businesses, the calibre of the live music artists and the sheer fun quotas  for both hosts and visitors alike.

The Dullstroom Winter Festival Trail Run is reviewed here- don't miss this in 2013 it's an awesome experience!

The Fly-Fishing Event at Walkerson's Lodge was also a huge success and money was raised for a worthy cause- saving the rhino.

By day the streets were thronged with visitors enjoying all that was on offer for both adults and children and by night the place was pumping! The village looked amazing by night with Xmas lights festooning many of the high street shops.

The venue for the music festival at the Cherry Grove Piazza with its tented roof and Chinese lanterns was spectacular as well as practical. The restaurants and pubs recorded record sales and the Christmas fare was a big hit with the visitors. The weather smiled on the occasion too with mild temperatures recorded in Mpumalanga for this time of year.

Many restaurants and shops decorated their shop fronts with Christmas lights and decorations and served Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.

Nothing succeeds like success and with the 2012 Festival having surpassed all expectations, next year’s Winter Festival promises to be an even bigger occasion. The village is geared to pull out all the stops and the feed-back from happy visitors is that many will be back for the 2013 Winter Festival in the Mpumalanga Highlands in July!

Thanks to the sponsors Hilltop Live and the Dullstroom Chamber for putting such a great festival together!

In August the SAGA Charity Fly fishing competition (25th August 2012)will be held in Dullstroom followed bythe SA Game Fair (29/30 September)  More good reasons to stay and play in Dullstroom. Don't be disappointed- book your accommodation early.

The 2013 edition of The Dullstroom Winter Festival is hosted by Hilltop Live and the Dullstroom Chamber of Business, and quite aptly made possible by Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky which is inspired by the Cape Mountains and its natural beauty. The whisky is the perfect partner in celebrating Dullstroom’s breathtaking scenery, unpolluted air and clear streams and the escape it offers from city life.

Apart from a rocking musical line-up, the weekend also features a winter festival trail run, a family fly fishing event and a mountain bike race. The town, it’s ample shops and eateries offer specials all weekend and fun things to do from Whisky tastings, displays at the town's raptor centre, cheese tastings, food markets, and a wide range of arts and crafts activities - all designed to be fun for the whole family, creating a unique festival atmosphere. It's going to be a weekend of Blues, Folk and Fishing and participation by whole village in the Christmas in July theme adds a fun, festive element to the event with many premises going all out with Christmas lights and Christmas decor... so tell the kids to watch out for Santa Claus!

This year's musical line-up is set to blow away the mid-Winter blues. Dan Patlansky returns to Dullstroom by popular demand, after shredding the event last year. This home-grown Blues maestro has seen his career storming forward in recent years, and he's just released a new album, 'Wooden Thoughts', his first acoustic record. Folk songbird Laurie Levine will be adding a feminine touch to proceedings. Exciting news is the Dullstroom debut of the legendary Arno Carstens. Also on the bill are the ever popular Radio Kalahari Orkes, fronted by the inimitable Ian Roberts. Matthew Mole, the highly rated young folk music star from Cape Town makes his Dullstroom debut. Naming James, a folk rock outfit from Joburg is also on the bill, as well as The Runaway Train Cult, an act whose classy, bluesy folk has been wowing local audiences over the past couple of years.

Tonteldoos is a small peach farming area near Dullstroom that organises an annual fun-filled festival.  Originally this peach harvest celebration was held in February (and it was often rained out!) and that has morphed into a country fair held over the Easter week-end.

Tonteldoos Festival DonkeyThe festival creates an opportunity for more people who are unfamiliar with the Dullstroom & Tonteldoos areas to visit and fall in love with the picturesque and peaceful environment. The many trout lodges offering fishing from dams and rivers will be finding the cooler weather resulting in better catches, making this an ideal breakaway opportunity for fly-fishing enthusiasts, with the festival rounding off an unforgettable family Easter experience.

About 2000 visitors and 80 stalls are expected at the  festival. The programme includes birds of prey in action, food stalls, delicatessen stalls, beer garden, Mampoer tasting, all day musical entertainment and 'boere sport' to name only a few. The donkey cart rides have become renowned, with the donkeys vying for first prize for Donkey and Cart in Best Condition! In short: a fun filled day for young and old.

The festival venue is easy to find on Rocky Road Farm, a farm adjacent to the provincial road running through Tonteldoos and will be well marked.
